While I hate to see the summer go I am looking forward to the fall fishery. The beginning of October used to mean the beginning of big, schooled up rockfish, this year it marks a pattern shift. We are starting to find some better fish moving up shallow, from Breezy point to the mouth of the Potomac and while it’s definitely not the good stuff yet with the main bay water temps still in 70’s Jeremy Kaltreider and I managed to find some decent fish in 5-7’ of water throwing topwater and light weight (3/8-1/2) Jigs and plastic. We did have to fish our way through the 16-24” fish to find some better ones but it’s hard to complain when they’re hitting topwaters in the middle of the afternoon. With that said we did find fish starting to relate to structure in the 25’-30’ range but in my eyes, shallow water blowups on top water baits are about as much fun as you can have legally.

Excellent report! Your right you can't beat a top water bite.
